Award-winning local producers Gingerbeard’s Preserves was founded in 2014 in a one-bed basement flat in central Bristol, by Harry Calvert and Claire Charras. These days the couple resides in vibrant Fishponds, close to their production hub in nearby Kingswood.
We live in BS16 / Fishponds because it has a nice community feel but also easy access to Bristol Central. Fishponds’ high street is popular with residents for its vibrant mix of independent shops, cafes, pubs etc. and provides a local hub for community life, attracting people seeking an area with a strong sense of belonging and convenient access to amenities.
Some of our favourites on the high street include Artichoke Wholefoods, bringing organic and local food to the area, Crafty Egg for some bar vibes, Daily Asian Food Store for keeping us stocked up with all the good South East Asian food stuff, Alfu International for keeping us stocked up with all the good Middle-Eastern food stuff, and Tame the Mane for being awesome hairdressers!
Fishponds is an urban, family-friendly community and convenient, with regular buses 48/49, and easy access to the Bristol to Bath cycle path from the high street, offering access to both Bristol Centre and further afield. Oldbury Court Estate is a lovely green space for a walk and has a good-sized play area for families, leading onto Snuff Mills with its woodland riverside walks. There’s also Hillfield Park locally and Eastville Park at the bottom of the hill.
Party in the Ponds in the summer at Oldbury Court is a fantastic community event showcasing all that is great about Fishponds – local people performing, market stalls, food and other fantastic things going on.
