Popular local artist Jenny Urquhart shares her experience of living in the area.
“BS6 is a leafy suburb of Bristol, brimming with Victorian architecture, handy shops and a vibrant cultural scene. It has highly-rated primary and secondary schools, and is very well positioned between the city centre in the south and motorway access in the north.
BS6 has loads of attractive green spaces, including St Andrew’s Park and the 442 acres of Durdham Downs, next to the Avon Gorge. As well as being an important home for nature, it is also a popular spot for walking and team sports (including the Saturday Downs League – a unique football league where all matches are played on the same set of pitches within the Downs). Whilst I don’t have a very big garden, having the Downs so close by always meant my children had a good run around and a place to play.
There is a strong sense of community in BS6, with locally organised events all year round, including street festivals, play street days and markets. The Downs is a well-used green space and hosts many music events, fun fairs and food festivals. One of my favourite BS6 events to take part in, is the North Bristol Arts Fair. Over 100 artists exhibit their work in studios and group venues, and it’s a great way to explore the area, and do some early arty Christmas shopping, in late November.”
