Life in ... Henleaze

Henleaze, BS9

New owner of established Room212 gallery and shop on the popular Gloucester Road, Hemali Modha, gives her insight on living and working in the area.

“As a local artist and long-time resident of over 30 years, BS7 has been the backdrop to much of my life. A vibrant, family-friendly area with a strong community spirit and excellent schools, it’s been the perfect place to raise my family, with everything we need just a stone’s throw away. At the heart of this neighbourhood is the iconic Gloucester Road — famed for being one of Europe’s longest stretches of independent shops. There’s not much you can’t find here, from fresh fruit and veg, artisan bread and a good book, to the perfect piece of art for your home. I’ve yet to discover an obscure, much-needed gadget that isn’t available in one of the brilliant local hardware stores! It’s a haven for foodies, art lovers, and eco-conscious shoppers — the ideal place to mooch around and soak up the atmosphere. In recent years, I’ve noticed and warmly welcomed a more multicultural feel to the neighbourhood, which now better reflects Bristol’s diversity.

We’re also lucky to have some beautiful green spaces nearby. My favourite dog-walking spots are St Andrews Park and Horfield Common, both of which have lovely cafés and play areas for little ones. Our favourite café Nectar House has a great vibe and Willow (my dog) always gets a warm welcome.

The area also buzzes with community activity — from gyms, yoga studios, and fitness classes in local halls, to groups for everything from tai chi and synchronised swimming to choirs and the WI. One of my favourite events is the North Bristol Art Trail, held on the last weekend of November, when homes and studios across the area open their doors to showcase and sell local artwork”.

“Becoming the new owner of Room 212 feels like a natural extension of everything I love about living and working here. I’m proud to continue its legacy as a space that champions local artists, while expanding what’s on offer to include a carefully curated range of natural wellness products, clothing, and sustainable, design-led lifestyle goods. Our tagline is: Love me, love my home.”
